About

A different way into wine.

The Wine Almanac is a personal, independent editorial guide to wine. We write about bottles, but rarely only about bottles.

What we look for

Wines with something to say. Sometimes that is a vineyard at an altitude that changes how the grapes ripen, or a vessel that has been in use for centuries. Sometimes it is a decision: to wait longer before bottling, to grow a variety almost no one else grows, or to keep working the way a place has always worked.

Fame, price and scores are not where we start. A short, careful selection seems more useful to us than an endless list.

How we tell the story

Every wine we feature has a Wine Story: where it comes from, how it was made, and the detail that makes it worth knowing. Regions give the places their due. Wine Moments set a bottle in a particular scene. The Journal follows an idea further than a single bottle allows.

We work from producers' own documentation and other published sources, and we attribute what we cannot confirm ourselves. When something is not known, we say so rather than fill the gap with a better story.

What we believe

That a wine is never only what is in the glass. It is a way into a place, a season, a landscape and a culture, and into choices someone made long before the bottle was opened.

That curiosity is a better guide than certainty, and that the most interesting thing about a wine is often the part the label leaves out.

How it is paid for

The Wine Almanac is free to read. Some links on our Wine Stories are affiliate links: if you buy through one, we may receive a commission at no additional cost to you, and the link is labelled as advertising. It never decides what we write about. We do not sell wine ourselves; any purchase is made on the merchant's own website. Our Affiliate Disclosure explains how it works.
